In a stunning 48-50 vote, the US Senate just rejected the SAVE America Act as part of budget reconciliation.
The bill would have implemented basic election security measures, voter ID and proof of citizenship, that over 80% of Americans support.
Four Republicans voted no: Thom Tillis, Lisa
Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Susan Collins.
It needed 60 votes to pass.
This is exactly why trust in Washington is in the toilet.
While millions of Americans want secure elections and basic safeguards against fraud, key Senate Republicans continue to stand in the way.
When something as fundamental as verifying who is voting gets blocked, it fuels the widespread belief that the system is rigged to protect the status quo rather than the people.
This failure is unacceptable.
